The word “Mushtifund” is derived from the Marathi word “Mushti” for “fist” and the English word “fund” for “funds”.
In 1908 local Hindu philanthropists joined hands to start a Marathi primary school to maintain Bharitya sanskriti during the Portuguese rule in Goa

At a time when funding for a Marathi medium school was not easy to come by in Portuguese Goa, a group of Hindu philanthropists came together to uphold our traditions, culture and sanskriti. They were inspired by the ideas of Lokmanya Tilak who had started, what could be considered to be the earliest crowdfunding method, with his paisa fund. Mushtifund began literally by collecting a fistful of rice from its earliest patrons and thus set up the school.
